Accredited programs, affordable prices: Drexel ELC offers both in 11-week and 6-week courses year round. We'll help you develop the skills and expertise for academic, professional, and personal success. At Drexel ELC, you'll get the English you need for the future you want.

Drexel ELC is located on the campus of Drexel University, in a safe residential area near the heart of beautiful, historic Philadelphia. The city lies on the East Coast of the U.S, about 2 hours by car from mountains, seashore, New York City, and Washington, DC. "Philly" offers many cultural, recreational, and entertainment opportunities. It was the first capital of the U.S. and is now the country's fifth-largest city.

Drexel ELC is a member of the consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP), hosts the headquarters of the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP), and is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA).

What we offer

  • Four 11-week terms per year, beginning in January, April, June, and September
  • Half-term (6-week) courses during the first or second half of each term
  • Small classes (10-12 average; 15-16 maximum)
  • Experienced teachers with advanced degrees in TESOL or related fields

Intensive English Program

  • Six levels, from Beginning to Advanced. Testing is done at the start of each term.
  • 18 class hours per week are required: 3 hours each morning of Speaking/Listening and Reading/Writing, plus one 3-hour afternoon Special Topic chosen from academic, language skills, business, cultural, or test preparation (TOEFL, TOEIC) topics.
  • Optional free grammar, pronunciation, and conversation classes.
  • Certificates are awarded at the end of full and half term for successful completion.

Global Business English Pre-MBA Program (GLOBE)

  • Designed to meet the needs of both prospective MBA students and pre-MBAs about to begin their studies.
  • Participants must have a university degree and place into ELC level 4 or above in both Speaking/Listening and Reading/Writing.
  • Classes include the Language of Business Information, an integrated skills course covering key business concepts and vocabulary; an advanced level Reading/Writing course focusing on essay writing, academic reading skills, and strategies for academic coursework; a Special Topic class; and optional free Electives.
  • Special features include networking opportunities, lectures at the College of Business, MBA application workshops, and an MBA class observation.

ELC Features

Weekly activities: The schedule includes parties, visits to historical sites and entertainment centers, art and cultural events, shopping trips, sports events, outdoor and recreational activities, and trips to New York City or Washington, DC.

Allison Rose Fellowships: Scholarships of $1,000 are awarded each term continuing full-time students. Allison Rose Fellows are student leaders who help with orientation for new students and lead the activities program. They receive tuition remission in exchange for office work at the ELC during the term.

Conversation Network: ELC students can meet and exchange conversation with native English speakers at Drexel.

Free access to Drexel University facilities: ELC students can use the Drexel library, gym and athletic facilities, language lab, computer lab and wireless internet service at no charge.

Housing:

Drexel World House Dormitory: The official ELC dorm, located on the Drexel campus, just two blocks from the ELC. Single, double and triple rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis. World House has a lounge with TV, VCR/DVD, stereo, and computers with internet access; shared kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry facilities.

International House: A large, privately-run dormitory-style residence located about 15 minutes from the ELC. It offers individual bedrooms, with 10 residents sharing a bathroom and kitchen. A computer room, weekly films, and special events are also available.

Homestay: An opportunity to live in an American home, practice English and learn about American culture. Homestays include a private room, self-serve breakfasts each morning, and 3 family-style dinners per week. Homes are located in residential neighborhoods convenient to the ELC (30-45 minutes travel time).

Studying at Drexel University

  • Advising is available for ELC students who wish to apply for university admission.
  • Advanced level students may combine English study with part-time university coursework after one term.
