The English as a Second Language Program, offered by the American Language Academy at Brooklyn College, provides practical skills for academic and professional success. Classes are taught by dedicated professionals, and class size is limited to ensure individual attention for each student. Teach English in Your Native Country
The demand for American English teachers is high around the world. At Brooklyn College, you will receive the expert training that will allow you to teach English when you return to your home country. You will be certified to teach English in private business schools and in the private sector.
To qualify for this full-time program, you must have a working knowledge of English. You will study grammar, writing, reading, and American pronunciation of English to prepare you to teach American English in your native country. You will be required to study Linguistics, Methods and Techniques of Teaching English as a Second Language, How to Teach English Grammar, Writing, Reading, Vocabulary, Conversation and Pronunciation.
Emphasis will be on:
- Phonetics
- Sounds and rhythm of American English speech
- Pronunciation problems
- Uneven patterns of speech
- Standard American English usage
Each class is integrated with theory and practice and has a teaching component so that you can apply what you have observed in an ESL classroom. In addition, we provide a free intensive internship program. This hands-on internship is available on an individual basis for Brooklyn College English-Language Teaching
Certificate Program Students
These courses meet the requirements for full-time international students. We are authorized under federal law to enroll non-immigrant alien students.
