  Program Description

In a globalized world, you need a global perspective:

Learn English in New York, where multilingualism and multiculturalism are a way of life.

In a globalized world, you want to be recognized as an individual:

Study English in the English Language Institute at NYIT, where each student is treated as an individual.

At the English Language Institute, you'll find:

  • Experienced, caring teachers who hold advanced degrees
  • Small classes (a maximum of 15 students)
  • Affordable tuition
  • A sequence of courses designed to meet individual needs
  • Computer-based language lab
  • One-on-one tutoring in all subjects without charge
  • Academic courses are open to students in higher level ELI classes
  • Students who complete ELI will be considered for admission to an academic program without a TOEFL score
  • Academic advisors, counselors and visa experts are always available

Study on one of two campuses:

  • In New York City--at the entrance to Central Park, around the corner from Lincoln Center, across the street from the new Time-Warner Building
  • On Long Island--in the heart of the North Shore's Gold Coast, just ½ hour from New York City, minutes from the beaches

The Program

Whether your English skills are non-existent, intermediate or advanced, ELI has classes in speaking, listening, reading and writing that are right for you. Classes meet from 3 to 20 hours per week for 15 weeks in the fall and spring and 8 to 10 weeks in the summer. Whether you want English skills to pursue academic studies, to advance in your career, to engage in cross-cultural communication or to function in your daily routine, these ELI classes can help you reach your goals.

In addition to classroom lessons, ELI offers students a computerized language lab to practice pronunciation and listening and for computer-assisted instruction in grammar and writing. Students in specialized classes learn to use computers to do research, write reports and make presentations.

New York City and Long Island provide a living lab in which students can practice the skills learned in classes. Trips to museums, TV studios, live theater and sporting events give students the opportunity to use their English skills and increase their understanding of American people and culture. ELI students quickly express themselves with confidence wherever English is spoken.

ELI would be pleased to design programs to meet the needs of your business or organization. Programs for medical personnel, communication arts professionals, staff in the hospitality industry, engineers and business executives--arenas in which NYIT's academic programs are world-renowned--can be offered to groups on either of our campuses or at job sites.
