Program Description
The Intensive English Program (IEP) is a relatively small English language program of about 70-80 students, located at Western Washington University, where there are 12,000 matriculating students. Our city of Bellingham, Washington, with a population of about 60,000, is located in a beautiful setting on Puget Sound, between the ocean and the Cascade mountains, and between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C.
Our courses are primarily designed to prepare international students for academic study at American colleges and universities. At our advanced level, we offer Academic Preparation classes and opportunities for students to participate in regular university classes. Through Conditional Undergraduate Admission, students may be accepted to the university and begin taking credit classes while enrolled in the IEP.
For students who are more interested in English for business or social purposes, our courses help students improve their control of spoken and written English, and our classes also develop their understanding of the language and the culture of the American people. We emphasize creating opportunities for our international students to meet and talk with American university students, both in the classroom and in informal conversational situations.
This is an ideal program for international students to come and improve their English, and, for those who are interested in doing so, continuing on into university undergraduate and graduate programs.
